Alda Summary
Alda is a small village located in Hall County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Platte River, approximately 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Grand Island. The population of Alda was 545 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Alda is located at 40°58'17" North, 98°37'45" West (40.9714, -98.6292). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2), all of it land.
History
Alda was founded in 1887 by the Union Pacific Railroad. The town was named after Alda B. Smith, the daughter of a Union Pacific official. The town was incorporated in 1891.
Economy
Alda is a small agricultural community. The main crops grown in the area are corn, soybeans, and wheat. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 206 households, and 145 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,360.5 people per square mile (524.7/km2). There were 221 housing units at an average density of 551.3 per square mile (212.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 206 households, out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.3% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845.
