History

Jeanerette was founded in 1836 by Jeanerette Broussard, a French-speaking Acadian from Nova Scotia. The city was named after him and was incorporated in 1848. The city was a major port on the Bayou Teche, and was a major center for the sugar cane industry. The city was also home to the first sugar refinery in the United States, which was built in 1868.

Geography

Jeanerette is located at 29°55'25" North, 91°41'25" West (29.923750, -91.690300). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.2 km2) (2.17%) is water.

Economy

Jeanerette is a major center for the sugar cane industry. The city is home to the first sugar refinery in the United States, which was built in 1868. The city is also home to several other industries, including a paper mill, a chemical plant, and a steel mill.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 7,272 people, 2,717 households, and 1,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,764.2 people per square mile (683.2/km2). There were 3,039 housing units at an average density of 735.2 per square mile (284.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 44.45% White, 53.45% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 2,717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% were married couples living together, 27.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.7% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.7 males.
