Parma is a city located in Canyon County, Idaho, United States. The population was 8,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boise metropolitan area.

History

Parma was founded in 1883 by a group of settlers from Parma, Ohio. The settlers were attracted to the area by the abundance of water and the fertile soil. The city was originally named "Parma City" but was later shortened to "Parma".

The city was incorporated in 1891 and has since grown to become the largest city in Canyon County

Geography

Parma is located at 43°59′N 116°56′W (43.983, -116.933). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Parma is a small agricultural community with a strong focus on farming and ranching. The city is home to several large farms and ranches, including the Parma Dairy, which produces milk, cheese, and other dairy products.
The city also has a strong manufacturing sector, with several companies producing a variety of products, including furniture, electronics, and automotive parts.

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,839 people, 3,093 households, and 2,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,976.3 people per square mile (1,531.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 8.7% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 16.2% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.41.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 30.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
