History
The area that is now Wautoma was first settled in the 1840s by settlers from New York and New England. The first settler in the area was William W. Smith, who arrived in 1845. The city was originally known as Smith's Crossing, and was later renamed Wautoma after the nearby Wautoma River. The city was officially incorporated in 1883.

Wautoma is located at 44°2'43"N 89°20'17"W (44.045278, -89.338333). It is situated in the Central Sands region of Wisconsin, and is part of the Fox Cities metropolitan area. The city has a total area of 2.2 square miles, all of which is land.
Economy
The economy of Wautoma is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several farms, as well as a number of small businesses. The city is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Waushara County Fairgrounds, the Waushara County Historical Society Museum, and the Wautoma Public Library.
