History
The area that is now Waukesha was first settled by European-Americans in 1834, after the Potawatomi ceded the land in the Treaty of Chicago. The first settlers were Horace and Lydia Chapin, who built a log cabin near what is now Big Bend. The town was originally called Prairieville, but was later changed to Waukesha in 1847. The name is derived from the Potawatomi word for “fox”.
The city was incorporated in 1847 and was officially chartered in 1852. The city grew rapidly in the late 19th century, and by 1900, it had a population of over 10,000. The city was a major center for the brewing industry, and was home to several large breweries, including the Pabst Brewing Company.

Waukesha is located in southeastern Wisconsin, approximately 20 miles west of Milwaukee. It is situated on the Fox River, which flows through the city. The city covers an area of 24.3 square miles, of which 24.2 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.
The city is located in the Kettle Moraine region of Wisconsin, which is characterized by rolling hills and glacial deposits. The city is located at an elevation of 830 feet above sea level.

The city is home to several large manufacturing companies, including Generac Power Systems, Waukesha Engine, and Briggs & Stratton.
