History
Middleton was first settled in 1848 by John Middleton, a settler from New York. The city was incorporated in 1875 and was named after him. The city was originally a farming community, but it has since grown into a thriving suburb of Madison.
Geography
Middleton is located at 43°5′45″N 89°30′17″W (43.095833, -89.504722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.
Economy
Middleton is home to a variety of businesses, including several large employers. Epic Systems, a healthcare software company, is the largest employer in the city, with over 8,000 employees. Other major employers include American Family Insurance, Spectrum Brands, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 17,442 people, 6,945 households, and 4,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,569.2 people per square mile (606.3/km2). There were 7,323 housing units at an average density of 659.3 per square mile (254.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 90.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 4.7% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 6,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $62,917, and the median income for a family was $76,917. Males had a median income of $50,917 versus $35,917 for females.
