History
Chaumont was first settled in 1802 by a group of French-Canadian immigrants. The town was named after the French city of Chaumont-sur-Loire. The town was officially established in 1808.
In the early 19th century, Chaumont was a major center for the lumber industry. The town was also home to several sawmills, gristmills, and a tannery.
Geography
Chaumont is located in the northern part of Jefferson County, New York. It is bordered by the towns of Lyme, Clayton, and Henderson. The town is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario.
The town has a total area of 33.2 square miles, of which 32.9 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles is water.
Economy
The economy of Chaumont is largely based on tourism and agriculture. The town is home to several wineries, including the Thousand Islands Winery and the Chaumont Winery.
The town is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the town. The population density was 56.2 people per square mile. There were 845 housing units at an average density of 25.7 per square mile.
The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
