Emerson borough Summary
Emerson Borough is a small borough located in Bergen County, New Jersey. It is situated in the northeastern part of the state, just west of the Hudson River and north of New York City. The borough is bordered by the towns of Oradell, Westwood, and Washington Township. The population of Emerson was 7,401 as of the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Emerson was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century. The area was part of the Township of Harrington until 1871, when it was incorporated as the Borough of Emerson. The borough was named after author and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Geography
Emerson is located at 40°57'N 74°02'W (40.95, -74.03). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.7 square miles (4.4 km2), all of which is land.
Economy
The economy of Emerson is largely based on small businesses and retail. The borough is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and professional services. The borough also has a few larger employers, such as the Emerson Hospital and the Emerson Public School District.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 7,401 people, 2,845 households, and 1,945 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,346.3 people per square mile (1,675.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 87.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $76,944, and the median income for a family was $90,917. Males had a median income of $60,938 versus $45,938 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $35,917. About 2.2% of families and 3.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
