Elmer Borough is a small borough located in Salem County, New Jersey. It is situated in the southwestern part of the state, about 25 miles from Philadelphia. The borough is bordered by Pittsgrove Township to the north, Upper Pittsgrove Township to the east, and Elsinboro Township to the south and west. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough had a total population of 1,498.
History
Elmer Borough was incorporated in 1891 from portions of Upper Pittsgrove Township. The borough was named after Elmer, a local Native American chief. The area was first settled in the late 1600s by English and Dutch settlers. The area was primarily agricultural until the late 1800s, when the railroad was built through the area. This allowed for the development of industry and commerce in the area.

Elmer Borough is located at 39°33'N 75°14'W (39.55, -75.23). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of which is land.
The borough is located in the southwestern part of Salem County, about 25 miles from Philadelphia. It is bordered by Pittsgrove Township to the north, Upper Pittsgrove Township to the east, and Elsinboro Township to the south and west.
Economy
The economy of Elmer Borough is primarily based on agriculture and light industry. The borough is home to several small businesses, including a few restaurants, a grocery store, and a few retail stores. The borough also has a few small manufacturing plants.
Demographics
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 1,498 people, 590 households, and 397 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,248.3 people per square mile (481.3/km2). There were 637 housing units at an average density of 531.7 per square mile (205.3/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 94.2% White, 2.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 590 households, out of which 32.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 13.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.6% were non-families. 27.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $45,000, and the median income for a family was $51,250. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $27,500 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $20,945.
