Gig Harbor Summary
Gig Harbor is a city located in Pierce County, Washington, United States. It is situated along the shores of Puget Sound, approximately 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Seattle. The population was 7,126 at the 2010 census. Gig Harbor is one of several cities that claim to be the "Gateway to the Olympic Peninsula".
History
Gig Harbor was first settled in the mid-1800s by the Wilkeson family, who named the area after the Wilkeson's boat, the "Gig". The Wilkesons were among the first settlers in the area, and their homestead is now a part of the city's downtown area.
The area was originally used for logging and fishing, and the harbor was a popular spot for recreational boaters. In the early 1900s, the area began to develop as a tourist destination, and the city was officially incorporated in 1946.
Geography
Gig Harbor is located at 47°17′N 122°35′W (47.28, -122.58). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.3 square miles (13.7 km2), of which, 4.9 square miles (12.7 km2) is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2) is water.
Economy
Gig Harbor's economy is largely based on tourism, with many visitors coming to the area to enjoy the waterfront and the nearby Olympic National Park. The city is also home to a number of businesses, including boat builders, marinas, and restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 7,126 people, 2,945 households, and 1,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,444.3 people per square mile (558.7/km2). There were 3,093 housing units at an average density of 627.3 per square mile (242.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 90.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.7% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 2,945 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,945. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $31,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
