Santa Clara Summary
Santa Clara is a city located in Washington County, Utah, United States. It is part of the St. George Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 8,835 at the 2010 census, up from 6,003 at the 2000 census.
History
Santa Clara was first settled in 1854 by Mormon pioneers. The town was originally named after the Santa Clara River, which was named by the Spanish explorer Francisco Atanasio Domínguez in 1776. The town was later renamed after the Virgin Mary, and the river was renamed the Santa Clara River.
The town was incorporated in 1856 and was the first city in Washington County. The city was the site of the first public school in the county, which was established in 1867.
Geography
Santa Clara is located at 37°7′17″N 113°37′17″W (37.121400, -113.621300). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.3 square miles (13.7 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Santa Clara is home to several businesses, including a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other services. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing and industrial businesses, including a large solar panel manufacturing plant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 6,003 people, 1,945 households, and 1,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,133.2 people per square mile (438.2/km2). There were 2,093 housing units at an average density of 393.3 per square mile (151.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 91.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.2% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 41.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.2% were non-families. 17.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.06 and the average family size was 3.48.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 32.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $45,944. Males had a median income of $31,944 versus $22,944 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,944. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
