History
Paragonah was first settled in 1851 by a group of Mormon pioneers led by John D. Lee. The town was named after the Parowan Valley, which was named by the Paiute Indians. The town was originally known as "Paragonah City" and was later shortened to "Paragonah".
The town was incorporated in 1891 and was the first town in Iron County to be incorporated. The town was a major stop on the Pony Express route and was also a major stop on the stagecoach route.
Geography
Paragonah is located at 37°45'25" North, 113°2'25" West (37.756944, -113.040278). The town is situated in the southwestern part of the state, about 20 miles east of Cedar City.
The town is located in the Parowan Valley, which is surrounded by the Markagunt Plateau to the east and the Paunsaugunt Plateau to the west. The town is located at an elevation of 5,890 feet.
Economy
The economy of Paragonah is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several farms and ranches, as well as a few small businesses.
The town is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Parowan Gap Petroglyphs, which are a series of ancient rock carvings located in the nearby Parowan Gap. The town is also home to the Parowan Valley Museum, which is a museum dedicated to the history of the area.
