Great Bend borough Summary
Great Bend Borough is a small borough located in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the Endless Mountains region of the state, and is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre–Hazleton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The borough has a population of 1,845 as of the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Great Bend Borough was first settled in the late 1700s by settlers from Connecticut. The first settler was a man named John B. Smith, who arrived in 1795. He was followed by other settlers from Connecticut, including the families of John and William Smith, who arrived in 1797. The area was originally known as Smithfield, and the first post office was established in 1817.
In 1825, the name of the town was changed to Great Bend, after the nearby Susquehanna River, which makes a large bend near the town. The town was incorporated as a borough in 1845.
Geography
Great Bend Borough is located in northeastern Pennsylvania, in the Endless Mountains region. It is situated in Susquehanna County, and is bordered by Clifford Township to the north, Gibson Township to the east, Lenox Township to the south, and New Milford Township to the west.
The borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of which is land. The Susquehanna River forms the eastern border of the borough.
Economy
The economy of Great Bend Borough is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The borough is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, hay, and wheat. The borough is also home to several tourist attractions, including the Great Bend Railroad Museum, the Great Bend Historical Society, and the Great Bend National Wildlife Refuge.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile. There were 809 housing units at an average density of 675.8 per square mile. The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
