Emmaus Borough is a borough located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located approximately 8 miles (13 km) southwest of Allentown, Pennsylvania, in the Lehigh Valley region of the state. As of the 2010 census, the borough had a population of 11,313.
History
The area that is now Emmaus Borough was first settled in 1741 by Moravian missionaries. The town was named after the biblical village of Emmaus, where Jesus appeared to two of his disciples after his resurrection. The town was incorporated as a borough in 1859.
Geography
Emmaus Borough is located at 40°33'17" North, 75°30'45" West (40.554722, -75.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Emmaus Borough is largely based on retail and services. The borough is home to several large retail stores, including Walmart, Target, and Home Depot. There are also several restaurants, banks, and other businesses located in the borough.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 11,313 people, 4,845 households, and 2,945 families residing in the borough. The population density was 5,093.3 people per square mile (1,967.2/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 2,293.3 per square mile (888.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 94.2% White, 1.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 4,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.2% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $56,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $23,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
