History
Burgersburg Borough was founded in 1790 by a group of German settlers who had migrated from the Palatinate region of Germany. The settlers named the town after their leader, John Burger, who had purchased the land from the local Native Americans. The town was incorporated in 1814 and was the first borough in York County.
The town grew slowly but steadily over the years, and by the mid-19th century, it had become a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several mills, including a grist mill, a saw mill, and a paper mill. The town also had a blacksmith shop, a tannery, and a general store.

The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
