LaGrange County Summary
Lagrange County is located in the northeastern corner of Indiana, and is part of the Fort Wayne metropolitan area. The county is bordered by Elkhart County to the north, Steuben County to the east, Noble County to the south, and DeKalb County to the west. The county seat is Lagrange, and the largest city is Howe.
History
Lagrange County was formed in 1832 from parts of Elkhart and Steuben counties. It was named for the Marquis de LaGrange, a French military leader who fought in the American Revolutionary War. The county was originally home to the Potawatomi and Miami Native American tribes.
The first settlers in the area were Quakers from North Carolina, who arrived in 1827. They were followed by German immigrants in the 1830s and 1840s. The county was largely agricultural, with the main crops being wheat, corn, and oats.
Geography
Lagrange County covers an area of 437 square miles, of which 434 square miles is land and 3 square miles is water. The county is located in the Tipton Till Plain region of Indiana, and is mostly flat with some rolling hills. The highest point in the county is located in the northwest corner, at an elevation of 1,065 feet.
The county is drained by the Elkhart River, which flows through the center of the county. Other major waterways include the Little Elkhart River, the St. Joseph River, and the St. Marys River.
Economy
The economy of Lagrange County is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The county is home to several large agricultural operations, including dairy farms, hog farms, and grain farms. The main crops grown in the county are corn, soybeans, wheat, and hay.
Manufacturing is also an important part of the economy. The county is home to several large factories, including a steel mill, a plastics plant, and a paper mill.

As of the 2010 census, the population of Lagrange County was 37,919. The racial makeup of the county was 94.3% White, 1.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
