Fayette County Summary
Fayette County, Indiana is located in the east-central part of the state, and is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. It is bordered by Union, Franklin, Rush, Henry, Wayne, and Union counties. The county seat is Connersville, and the county has a population of 24,277 as of the 2010 census.
History
Fayette County was formed in 1818 from parts of Franklin and Wayne counties. It was named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French military officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War. The county was originally divided into three townships: Connersville, Harrison, and Jennings. The county was later divided into nine townships: Connersville, Harrison, Jennings, Fairview, Jackson, Orange, Posey, Wayne, and Waterloo.
The first settlers in the county were mostly of English and German descent. The first county seat was located in Connersville, and the first courthouse was built in 1820. The county was an important center of the Underground Railroad, and many escaped slaves found refuge in the county.
Geography
Fayette County is located in east-central Indiana, and is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. It is bordered by Union, Franklin, Rush, Henry, Wayne, and Union counties. The county has a total area of 437 square miles, of which 434 square miles is land and 3 square miles is water. The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern part of the county. The highest point in the county is located in the northwest corner, at an elevation of 890 feet.
The county is drained by the Whitewater River, which flows through the county from north to south. The county is also home to several small lakes, including Lake Fayette, Lake Connersville, and Lake Harrison.
Economy
Fayette County has a diverse economy, with a mix of manufacturing, agriculture, and services. The county is home to several large employers, including Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, which employs over 3,000 people in the county. Other major employers include Fayette Regional Health System, Fayette County Hospital, and Fayette County Public Schools.
Agriculture is an important part of the county's economy, with corn, soybeans, and wheat being the main crops. Livestock production is also important, with cattle, hogs, and poultry being the main animals raised.

The racial makeup of the county was 95.3% White, 1.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
