History
Staunton was founded in 1747 by Thomas Lewis and John Lewis, two brothers from Wales. The city was named after Lady Rebecca Staunton, the wife of Thomas Lewis. The city was originally a trading post and a stop on the Great Wagon Road, which connected the Shenandoah Valley to the Tidewater region of Virginia.
During the Civil War, Staunton was a major supply center for the Confederate Army. The city was the site of several battles, including the Battle of Staunton River Bridge in 1864. After the war, the city experienced a period of economic growth and prosperity.
