History
The area around Seven Mile Ford has been inhabited for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence suggests that Native Americans lived in the area as early as 8,000 BC. The Cherokee and Shawnee tribes were the most prominent in the area prior to European settlement.
The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s. The community was initially known as “Seven Mile Ford” due to the seven-mile ford that was located along the North Fork of the Holston River. The ford was used by settlers to cross the river and access the area.
In the early 1800s, the community began to grow and develop. A post office was established in 1820 and a school was built in 1825. The community was officially incorporated in 1836.
In the late 1800s, the community began to decline. The post office closed in 1891 and the school closed in 1895. The population of the community dwindled and by the early 1900s, the community was largely abandoned.
