Fair Oaks Summary
Founded in 1864, Fair Oaks is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Fairfax County, Virginia. It is situated approximately 20 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. and is part of the Washington metropolitan area. The population of Fair Oaks was 30,117 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Fair Oaks is located at 38°45'25" North, 77°22'45" West (38.756944, -77.379167). It is situated in the southeastern corner of Fairfax County, Virginia, and is bordered by the cities of Fairfax and Oakton to the north, Centreville to the east, and Chantilly to the south. The CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles, all of which is land.
History
Fair Oaks was first settled in the early 19th century by farmers and was known as "Fairfax Station" until the Civil War. During the war, the area was the site of the Battle of Fair Oaks, which took place on May 31, 1862. The battle was part of the Peninsula Campaign and resulted in a Confederate victory. After the war, the area was renamed "Fair Oaks" in honor of the battle.
In the late 19th century, the area began to develop as a residential community. The first post office was established in 1887 and the first school was built in 1895. The area continued to grow throughout the 20th century and by the 2000 census, the population had grown to 30,117.
Economy
Fair Oaks is primarily a residential community, but it does have a few businesses. The largest employer in the area is the Fair Oaks Mall, which is a shopping mall located in the center of the CDP. Other businesses in the area include restaurants, banks, and other retail stores.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, the population of Fair Oaks was 30,117. The racial makeup of the CDP was 75.3% White, 11.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 8.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.3% of the population.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $95,845, and the median income for a family was $103,945. The per capita income for the CDP was $41,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
