Ranger Summary
Ranger is a city located in Eastland County, Texas, United States. It is situated along the banks of the Leon River, approximately 80 miles west of Fort Worth. The population was 2,471 at the 2010 census.
History
Ranger was founded in 1877 by a group of settlers from Missouri. The town was named after the Texas Ranger Division, which had been established in 1874. The town was incorporated in 1882 and quickly became a center for the cattle industry. In the early 1900s, Ranger was a major stop on the Texas and Pacific Railway.
Geography
Ranger is located at 32°22'25" North, 98°45'45" West (32.373611, -98.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles, all of it land.
Economy
Ranger's economy is largely based on the oil and gas industry. The city is home to several oil and gas companies, including Ranger Oil and Gas, Ranger Energy, and Ranger Exploration. The city also has a strong agricultural sector, with a variety of crops grown in the area.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,471 people, 945 households, and 645 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,093.2 people per square mile (422.3/km²). There were 1,072 housing units at an average density of 467.2 per square mile (180.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 79.17% White, 0.61% African American, 0.73% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 17.45% from other races, and 2.06% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 28.45% of the population.
There were 945 households out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.20.
In the city, the population was spread out with 28.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $31,250. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,845. About 17.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
