Marietta was founded in 1873 by a group of settlers from Arkansas. The town was named after the wife of one of the settlers, Marietta Smith. The town was originally located on the banks of the Sulphur River, but was moved to its current location in 1876.
Marietta was an important stop on the Texas and Pacific Railway, which ran through the town from 1876 to 1882. The town was also a major cotton shipping center, and the local economy was largely based on cotton production.
In the early 1900s, Marietta was a thriving community with a population of over 1,000. The town had several stores, a bank, a hotel, a cotton gin, and a school.
