Ipswich is a small town located in Edmunds County, South Dakota, United States. It is situated in the northeastern part of the state, about 25 miles west of Aberdeen. The population of Ipswich was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
History
Ipswich was founded in 1883 by a group of settlers from Ipswich, Massachusetts. The town was named after the Massachusetts town, and the first post office was established in 1884. The town was incorporated in 1887.
The town was originally a farming community, but in the early 1900s, the railroad came to town, bringing with it a new industry. The railroad provided jobs for many of the town's residents, and it also allowed for the transportation of goods and services to and from the town.

Ipswich is located at 45°37'25" North, 98°17'45" West (45.623, -98.296). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 662.2 per square mile (255.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.5% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.09.
