Sully County Summary

Sully County is located in the central part of South Dakota, in the Missouri River Valley. It is bordered by Hyde County to the north, Hughes County to the east, Potter County to the south, and Haakon County to the west. The county seat is Onida, and the largest city is Pierre, the state capital.

History

Sully County was established in 1873, and was named after General Alfred Sully, a Civil War veteran and Indian fighter. The county was originally part of the Great Sioux Reservation, and was opened to white settlement in 1877. The first settlers were mostly ranchers and farmers, and the county quickly grew in population.
In the early 1900s, the county experienced a period of rapid growth, as the railroad was built through the area. This allowed for the development of towns and cities, and the county's population increased significantly.

Geography

Sully County covers an area of 1,845 square miles, and is located in the Missouri River Valley. The county is mostly flat, with rolling hills in the east and south. The terrain is mostly grassland, with some areas of forest. The county is home to several lakes, including Lake Oahe, Lake Sharpe, and Lake Francis Case.
The county is home to several wildlife refuges, including the Oahe Wildlife Refuge, the Sharpe Wildlife Refuge, and the Francis Case Wildlife Refuge. These refuges provide habitat for a variety of wildlife, including deer, elk, bison, and waterfowl.

Economy

The economy of Sully County is largely based on agriculture. The county is home to several large farms, and the main crops grown are wheat, corn, soybeans, and hay. The county is also home to several large cattle ranches, and the main livestock raised are cattle and sheep.
