Kingsbury County Summary
History
Kingsbury County is located in the east-central part of South Dakota, and is bordered by Deuel, Grant, Brookings, and Miner counties. The county was established in 1873 and was named after George W. Kingsbury, a prominent early settler. The county seat is De Smet, which was founded in 1880.
The first settlers in Kingsbury County were mostly of Scandinavian descent, and the county was heavily influenced by the Lutheran Church. The first church in the county was built in 1881, and the first school was established in 1883.
