Baltic Summary
Baltic is a small city located in the southeastern corner of South Dakota, in Minnehaha County. It is situated on the Big Sioux River, about 10 miles south of Sioux Falls. The city was founded in 1878 and incorporated in 1881. As of the 2010 census, the population of Baltic was 1,077.
Geography
Baltic is located at 43°30'N 96°37'W (43.500, -96.617). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Baltic’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several businesses, including a feed mill, a grain elevator, a lumber yard, and a manufacturing plant. The city also has a small retail sector, with several stores and restaurants.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,077 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,179.4 people per square mile (454.7/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 517.2 per square mile (199.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 21.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females.
