History
The area of Jayuya Municipio was originally inhabited by the Taíno Indians, who called the area “Xayuya”. The Taíno were a peaceful people who lived in small villages and practiced agriculture. The Spanish arrived in the area in the early 16th century and began to colonize the area. The Spanish named the area “Jayuya”, which is derived from the Taíno word “Xayuya”.
