History

The area that is now Municipio was originally inhabited by the Taíno people, who were the indigenous people of Puerto Rico. The Taíno were a peaceful people who lived off the land, fishing and farming. They were eventually conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century.
The area was then settled by Spanish colonists in the 17th century. The area was known as "Tierra de los Pinos" (Land of the Pines) due to the abundance of pine trees in the area.
