Plumwood Summary
Plumwood is a small village located in Muskingum County, Ohio. It is situated on the banks of the Muskingum River, approximately 25 miles east of Zanesville. The village has a population of approximately 500 people and is part of the Zanesville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Plumwood was founded in 1817 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was named after the abundance of wild plum trees in the area. The first post office was established in 1820 and the village was incorporated in 1837.
In the late 19th century, Plumwood was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several mills, including a grist mill, a saw mill, and a woolen mill. The village also had a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a hotel.
In the early 20th century, Plumwood experienced a period of decline. The mills closed and the population began to decline. The village was hit hard by the Great Depression and many of the businesses closed.
Geography
Plumwood is located in Muskingum County, Ohio. It is situated on the banks of the Muskingum River, approximately 25 miles east of Zanesville. The village has a total area of 0.6 square miles, all of which is land.
The village is located in a rural area and is surrounded by farmland. The terrain is mostly flat and the soil is mostly clay. The climate is humid continental, with hot summers and cold winters.
