History
Atwater was founded in 1810 by settlers from Connecticut. The village was named after a local creek, which was named after a settler named Atwater. The village was incorporated in 1837.
Atwater was a major stop on the Ohio and Erie Canal, which was built in the early 19th century. The canal was used to transport goods and people between Cleveland and Akron. The canal was eventually replaced by the Pennsylvania Railroad in the late 19th century.
