Amherst Summary
Amherst, Ohio is a city located in Lorain County, Ohio, United States. The city is located in the northeastern part of the state, approximately 30 miles west of Cleveland. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 12,021.
History
The area that is now Amherst was first settled in 1815 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The town was originally known as "New Connecticut" and was later renamed "Amherst" after the town of Amherst, Massachusetts. The town was officially incorporated in 1837.
In the late 19th century, Amherst was a major center for the production of bricks. The city was also home to several factories, including a paper mill, a furniture factory, and a foundry.
Geography
Amherst is located at 41°21'N 82°19'W (41.35, -82.32). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.
Economy
Amherst is home to several businesses and industries, including manufacturing, retail, and healthcare. The city is also home to several educational institutions, including Lorain County Community College and the University of Akron.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 12,021 people, 4,845 households, and 3,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,310.2 people per square mile (895.2/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 983.2 per square mile (380.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 3.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 4,845 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $50,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
