History
The area that is now Mitchell was first settled in 1887 by the Union Pacific Railroad. The town was named after the railroad's president, John Mitchell. The town was incorporated in 1891.

The economy of Mitchell is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several large farms and ranches, as well as a number of small businesses. Tourism is also an important part of the local economy, with visitors coming to the area to enjoy the nearby attractions, such as Scotts Bluff National Monument and Chimney Rock National Historic Site.

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,890 people, 1,093 households, and 717 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,408.3 people per square mile (929.3/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 986.7 per square mile (381.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 4.3% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
