Geneva is a small city located in Fillmore County, Nebraska, United States. It is the county seat of Fillmore County and is located along the Big Blue River. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
History
Geneva was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Geneva, Illinois. The city was named after the Illinois city, and was incorporated in 1873. The city was originally located on the east side of the Big Blue River, but was moved to the west side in 1876 due to flooding.
Geography
Geneva is located at 40°45'17" North, 97°37'17" West (40.754722, -97.621389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Geneva's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant. The city also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small businesses located in the city.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (593.7/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 681.7 per square mile (263.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
