Sherman County Summary
Sherman County is a county located in the state of Nebraska in the Midwestern United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 6,010, making it the fourth-least populous county in Nebraska. The county seat is Loup City. The county was named for General William Tecumseh Sherman, a Union Army leader during the American Civil War.
History

Geography
Sherman County is located in the central part of Nebraska, and is bordered by Buffalo County to the north, Howard County to the east, Greeley County to the south, and Valley County to the west. The county has a total area of 576 square miles, of which 575 square miles is land and 1.2 square miles (0.2%) is water.
The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the western part. The Loup River runs through the county, and there are several small lakes and ponds scattered throughout.

Agriculture is the main economic activity in Sherman County. The county is home to a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, wheat, and alfalfa. Cattle and hogs are also raised in the county.

As of the 2010 census, there were 6,010 people, 2,521 households, and 1,717 families living in the county. The population density was 10.4 people per square mile. There were 2,845 housing units at an average density of 4.9 per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 97.3% White, 0.3% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 2,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.3% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the county, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 23.2% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $43,929. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $20,938 for females. The per capita income for the county was $17,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.7% of those age 65 or over.
