History

Pawnee County was established in 1855 and named after the Pawnee Native American tribe. The county was originally part of the Nebraska Territory, and was one of the original counties established when the state of Nebraska was admitted to the Union in 1867.
The first settlers in the area were mostly of German and Irish descent. The first county seat was located in Table Rock, but it was moved to Pawnee City in 1872.

Geography

Pawnee County is located in the southeastern corner of Nebraska. It is bordered by the Platte River to the north, the Loup River to the east, and the Republican River to the south. The county has a total area of 576 square miles, of which 575 square miles is land and 1 square mile is water.
The county is mostly flat, with rolling hills in the east and south. The highest point in the county is located in the northwest corner, at an elevation of 1,890 feet.

Economy

The economy of Pawnee County is largely based on agriculture. The county is home to several large farms, as well as several smaller family farms. The main crops grown in the county are corn, soybeans, and wheat.
The county also has a strong manufacturing sector, with several factories producing a variety of products, including furniture, clothing, and electronics.

As of the 2010 census, there were 3,567 people, 1,521 households, and 990 families living in the county. The population density was 6.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 97.3% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
