History
Garfield County was established in 1887 and named after James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States. The county was originally part of Loup County, but was split off in 1887. The county was initially populated by settlers from the eastern United States, but later saw an influx of immigrants from Scandinavia and Germany.

The racial makeup of the county was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 6.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the county, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the county was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
