It is bordered by Wheeler County to the north, Greeley County to the east, Valley County to the south, and Loup County to the west. The county seat is Burwell, and the largest city is Burwell. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,068, making it the second-least populous county in Nebraska.

History

Garfield County was established in 1887 and named after James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States. The county was originally part of Loup County, but was split off in 1887.
