Douglas County Summary
Douglas County, Nebraska is located in the eastern part of the state and is the most populous county in Nebraska. It is bordered by Sarpy County to the south, Washington County to the north, and Dodge County to the west. The county seat is Omaha, the largest city in the state.
History
Douglas County was established in 1854 and named after Stephen A. Douglas, a prominent politician from Illinois. The county was originally part of the Nebraska Territory, which was created in 1854. The county was originally populated by Native American tribes, including the Omaha, Otoe, and Pawnee.
In 1854, the first settlers arrived in the area and began to establish farms and businesses. The first county seat was located in Florence, which is now part of Omaha. In 1857, the county seat was moved to Omaha, which had become the largest city in the county.
In the late 19th century, the county experienced a period of rapid growth due to the arrival of immigrants from Europe. This influx of immigrants helped to fuel the growth of Omaha, which became a major industrial and transportation hub.
Geography
Douglas County covers an area of 517 square miles and is located in the eastern part of Nebraska. The county is bordered by Sarpy County to the south, Washington County to the north, and Dodge County to the west. The county is located in the Missouri River Valley and is home to several rivers, including the Platte, Elkhorn, and Missouri.
The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the western part of the county. The highest point in the county is located in the western part of the county, near the town of Waterloo, and is 1,068 feet above sea level.
Economy
Douglas County has a diverse economy, with a mix of manufacturing, services, and agriculture. The county is home to several major employers, including the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Mutual of Omaha, and Union Pacific Railroad.
