Beaver City Summary
Beaver City is a city located in Furnas County, Nebraska, United States. It is the county seat of Furnas County. The population was 1,068 at the 2010 census.
History
Beaver City was founded in 1887 by the Union Pacific Railroad. The city was named after the nearby Beaver Creek. The first post office was established in 1888. The city was incorporated in 1889.
Geography
Beaver City is located at 40°14'17" North, 100°2'17" West (40.238, -100.038). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Beaver City is a small agricultural community. The main industries are farming and ranching. The city also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,213.3 people per square mile (468.7/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 535.2 per square mile (206.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 7.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 22.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
