Albion Summary
Albion is a city located in Boone County, Nebraska, United States. It is the county seat of Boone County and is located along the Platte River. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 1,845.
History
Albion was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Albion, Michigan. The city was named after the Michigan city, and was incorporated in 1873. The city was originally located on the east side of the Platte River, but was moved to the west side in 1876 due to flooding.
Geography
Albion is located at 41°45'25"N 98°2'25"W (41.756944, -98.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Albion's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, as well as a number of small businesses. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a plastics plant and a metal fabrication plant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 676.2 per square mile (261.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.90% White, 0.11% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.60% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.29% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 19.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 23.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $40,000. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
