Barney Summary
Barney, North Dakota is a small town located in the southeastern corner of the state. It is situated in the Red River Valley, a flat, fertile region of the Great Plains. The town was founded in 1882 and has a population of approximately 200 people.
History
Barney was founded in 1882 by a group of settlers from Minnesota. The town was named after a local farmer, Barney Johnson, who donated the land for the town. The first settlers were mostly farmers and ranchers, and the town quickly grew to include a post office, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a school.
In the early 1900s, the town experienced a period of growth and prosperity. The railroad arrived in 1906, bringing with it new businesses and opportunities. The town also became a center for the local agricultural industry, with several grain elevators and a creamery.
In the 1950s, the town began to decline as the railroad industry declined and the agricultural industry shifted to larger, more mechanized operations. The population of Barney began to decline, and by the 1970s, the town was in danger of becoming a ghost town.
In the 1980s, the town began to experience a resurgence. The local economy was bolstered by the opening of a new grain elevator and a new creamery. The town also began to attract new businesses, including a restaurant, a grocery store, and a hardware store.
