Gautier Summary
Gautier is a city located in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. It is part of the Pascagoula Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 18,572 at the 2010 census, an increase of 67.4% from the 2000 census.
History
Gautier was founded in 1812 by French settlers, and was named after Pierre Gautier, a French settler who had arrived in the area in 1790. The city was incorporated in 1848. During the Civil War, Gautier was the site of a Confederate fort.
Geography
Gautier is located at 30°24'25" North, 88°35'17" West (30.406944, -88.588333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.2 square miles (62.6 km2), of which 23.9 square miles (61.8 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) is water.
Economy
Gautier is home to several large employers, including Ingalls Shipbuilding, Chevron, and the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources. The city also has a thriving tourism industry, with several hotels, restaurants, and attractions.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 11,033 people, 4,072 households, and 2,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 462.2 people per square mile (178.7/km2). There were 4,521 housing units at an average density of 189.7 per square mile (73.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 17.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 4,072 households, out of which 35.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.11.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,813, and the median income for a family was $44,919. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,945.
