History
Sturgeon was founded in 1819 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The town was named after the sturgeon fish, which were abundant in the Missouri River. The town was incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Sturgeon was a thriving river port. It was a major stop on the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and the town was home to several factories, including a flour mill, a sawmill, and a brickyard.

Sturgeon is located at 38°59'45" North, 92°20'45" West (38.995833, -92.345833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
