Fulton Summary
Fulton, Missouri is a city located in Callaway County, in the central part of the state. It is the county seat and the largest city in the county. The city is located on the Missouri River, and is part of the Jefferson City, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 12,790.
History
Fulton was founded in 1825 by James Wilson, a settler from Kentucky. The city was named after Robert Fulton, the inventor of the steamboat. The city was incorporated in 1859.
During the Civil War, the city was the site of the Battle of Fulton, which was fought on July 5, 1861. The battle was a Confederate victory, and resulted in the capture of the city by the Confederate forces.
In the late 19th century, Fulton became an important center for the manufacture of agricultural equipment. The city was also home to several large brickyards, which supplied bricks for many of the buildings in the city.
Geography
Fulton is located at 38°55'25" North, 91°56'45" West (38.923607, -91.945862). The city is situated on the Missouri River, and is located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Jefferson City, the state capital.
The city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Fulton's economy is largely based on manufacturing and agriculture. The city is home to several large manufacturing companies, including the Callaway Nuclear Power Plant, which is the largest employer in the city. Other major employers include the Fulton State Hospital, the Fulton Public Schools, and the Fulton Medical Center.
Agriculture is also an important part of the local economy. The city is home to several large farms, and is a major producer of corn, soybeans, and wheat.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 12,790 people, 4,945 households, and 3,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,547.2 people per square mile (596.3/km2). There were 5,521 housing units at an average density of 672.2 per square mile (259.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 4,945 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,945, and the median income for a family was $45,813. Males had a median income of $32,917 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,845. About 10.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 10.2% of those age 65 or over.
