Charlack Summary
Charlack is a small city located in St. Louis County, Missouri. It is situated in the northwest corner of the county, just south of the city of St. Louis. The population of Charlack was 4,845 at the 2010 census.
History
Charlack was founded in the late 19th century by German immigrants. The city was named after Charles Ackerman, a local landowner. The city was incorporated in 1947.
Geography
Charlack is located at 38°45'25" North, 90°25'17" West (38.756944, -90.421389). The city has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of which is land.
Economy
Charlack is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents commuting to St. Louis for work. The city does have some light industry, including a few small manufacturing plants.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 4,845 people, 1,945 households, and 1,323 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,037.5 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 15.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 3.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,964, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $37,500 versus $27,500 for females.
