Spring Grove Summary
History
The area now known as Spring Grove, Minnesota was first settled in 1854 by Norwegian immigrants. The first settlers were Ole and Ingeborg Knutson, who built a log cabin on the banks of the Root River. The Knutson family was soon joined by other Norwegian immigrants, and the settlement was named Spring Grove after the nearby spring-fed creek.
The town of Spring Grove was officially incorporated in 1872. The first mayor was Ole Knutson, who served until 1876. During this time, the town grew rapidly, with the population increasing from just over 200 in 1872 to over 1,000 by 1880.
The town was a major center of commerce in the area, with several stores, a bank, a hotel, and a post office. The town also had a sawmill, a flour mill, and a creamery.
In the late 19th century, the town was a major center of the Norwegian Lutheran Church. The first church was built in 1876, and the current church was built in 1895.
