Nerstrand Summary
Nerstrand is a small city located in Rice County, Minnesota, United States. It is situated along the Cannon River, approximately 25 miles south of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.
History
Nerstrand was founded in 1856 by Norwegian immigrants. The town was named after the Norwegian town of Nærstrand, which means “near the shore”. The first settlers were mostly farmers, and the town quickly grew to include a post office, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a school.
In the late 19th century, the town was a major producer of wheat and other grains. The town also had a thriving lumber industry, with several sawmills located in the area.

Nerstrand is located at 44°25′N 93°2′W (44.4133, -93.0333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 212 households, of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 33.0% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.17.
The median age in the city was 38.2 years. 27.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 24.2% were from 25 to 44; 28.2% were from 45 to 64; and 13.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.7% male and 50.3% female.
