Roeland Park Summary
Roeland Park, Kansas is a small city located in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. It is a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri, and is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The population was 6,837 at the 2010 census.
History
Roeland Park was founded in 1949 by the Roeland Park Company, a real estate development firm. The company was founded by two brothers, William and Robert Roeland, who had previously developed the nearby city of Mission, Kansas. The city was named after the brothers, and the first homes were built in 1950.
Geography
Roeland Park is located at 39°02'17" North, 94°37'17" West (39.038, -94.621). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.7 square miles (4.4 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Roeland Park is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several corporate offices, including the headquarters of the Kansas City Star newspaper.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 6,837 people, 2,845 households, and 1,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,039.2 people per square mile (1,564.2/km2). There were 3,039 housing units at an average density of 1,788.2 per square mile (692.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 83.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.2% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $63,958. Males had a median income of $45,938 versus $35,938 for females.
