Neponset Summary
Neponset is a small village located in Bureau County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ottawa–Streator Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Neponset was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from New England. The town was named after Neponset, Massachusetts, the hometown of one of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1855.
In 1856, the first school was built in Neponset. The school was a one-room building that served as both a school and a church. In 1872, a new two-story school was built. This school served the community until it was replaced by a new building in 1925.
In 1867, the first railroad line was built through Neponset. This line connected the town to the larger cities of Ottawa and Streator. The railroad allowed the town to become a center of commerce and industry.
In 1871, the first newspaper, the Neponset Herald, was established. The newspaper was published until the early 1900s.
In 1873, the first bank was established in Neponset. The bank was called the First National Bank of Neponset.
In 1876, the first telephone line was established in Neponset. This allowed the town to become connected to the outside world.
In 1877, the first fire department was established in Neponset. The fire department was made up of volunteers and was responsible for protecting the town from fires.
In 1878, the first electric lights were installed in Neponset. This allowed the town to become more modern and efficient.
In 1881, the first waterworks was established in Neponset. This allowed the town to have a reliable source of water.

Neponset's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms that produce corn, soybeans, and other crops.
The town is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 891.7 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 382.5 per square mile (147.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $21,250 for females.
