Lake Bluff Summary
Lake Bluff is a village located in Lake County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,722 at the 2010 census. It is located along the shore of Lake Michigan, about 30 miles north of Chicago.
History
The area that is now Lake Bluff was first settled in the 1830s by a group of settlers from New England. The settlers were attracted to the area by its natural beauty and its proximity to Lake Michigan. The village was officially incorporated in 1895.
The village was named after the nearby lake, which was named for its bluffs. The bluffs were formed by the glaciers that once covered the area.
Geography
Lake Bluff is located at 42°19'25" North, 87°51'17" West (42.323, -87.854). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Lake Bluff is largely based on tourism and retail. The village is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and galleries. The village also has a marina, which provides access to Lake Michigan.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 5,722 people, 2,093 households, and 1,541 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,611.2 people per square mile (1,004.2/km2). There were 2,231 housing units at an average density of 1,006.2 per square mile (389.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.3% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $97,917, and the median income for a family was $117,917. Males had a median income of $81,250 versus $50,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $50,917. About 1.7% of families and 2.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.7% of those under age 18 and 2.7% of those age 65 or over.
