Kinderhook Summary
Kinderhook is a small village located in Pike County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Illinois River, approximately 30 miles south of Springfield. The population of Kinderhook was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
History
Kinderhook was founded in 1835 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after the Kinderhook Reformed Church in New York, which was the home church of many of the settlers. The village was incorporated in 1837.
Kinderhook was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, with many of the settlers being abolitionists. The village was also a major stop on the Illinois Central Railroad, which connected Chicago to Cairo, Illinois.
Geography
Kinderhook is located at 39°45'25" North, 90°37'45" West (39.756944, -90.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all land.

Kinderhook's economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a hog farm, and a grain farm. The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 663.2 per square mile (256.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.54% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
